18 June – 4 July 2004 These are the questions that video and installation artist Oriana Fox illuminates in her much acclaimed work, currently being exhibited in a solo showing at the Rosy Wilde Gallery. In an era in which the nuclear family is more prone to fission than fusion, are the energies and the influences of family diminished, or do they re-emerge transformed and transforming of its members? How is the individual enriched, diminished, and left unchanged by the bombardment of the particularities of personal experience and cultural zeitgeist? Oriana Fox takes us on an evocative artistic journey into the transformative caldrons of bio family, blended family, and the family of peers. Her video 3 into 1 filmed with love, irony, and humor, is a portrayal of the modern primary family elements and forces that smolder and transform the self into a new amalgamation. It is said to draw viewers into its vortex and catalyzes their self-reflection. The role of the family of women on personal identity is explored in Fox's critically acclaimed art videos Our Bodies, Ourselves and Tale of Narcissus. The external and internal definitions of women in our society, which purports to promote feminist values, are explored in these films that revisit the iconic hit television series Sex and the City from the vantage point of the 1970s. The videos are a caring and critical look at contemporary friendship, love and eroticism and ask, "How have we changed?" The environment one is surrounded by speaks volumes about the struggles between self and society. Fox's videos are beautifully presented in an installation that creates an unexpected home environment designed to reflect the owner's identity. Its comic disorientation offers a refreshing alternative to pre-packaged, merchandized conceptions of what should provide us comfort and shelter. In all, “Pop Culture, Mom Culture, Peer Culture, and Me" is a fascinating look at contemporary issues of self and affiliation as seen through creations of the very talented Oriana Fox. This show is not to be missed. –Michael Fox,
